You have more than an option

1. Auto Updater, Download the 1.3.37a client, run iw4mp.exe to start the auto updater and let it download the map packs and other needed files. http://www.multiupload.com/D9TT5W10RY

2. Manual Update, Probably faster than the Auto Update this requires for you to actually do stuff.
First of all Download The 1.3.37a client but don't run iw4mp.exe, download this pdf and follow all of what it says. Download the linked files and put them where it tells you to.

To connect to your friend you have to alt-tab to the desktop where the console is and type connect IP (where IP is your friend's IP)
Does it have to be the torrented game because i just took my steam mw2 files and copied all the cracks and stuff will that work?
YEAH legit steam version will work.
